Strength in Partnerships - Building an Alliance

Part One - Introduction

Recently we discovered a company in our Industry who is trying to make a difference. They are making the Martial Arts Business more profitable and reputable while providing a value added service for their existing students and community. They are reaching more and more people via the means of a new education and marketing concept.

The Company is Safe Day Education.

Safe Day Education's mission statement is clear and simple. "To Build An Alliance Of Martial Arts Expert Business People That Will Serve As The World's First Street Proofing Organization." To accomplish this goal they are crossing all the barriers of styles and martial arts types, associations and organizations, traditionalist and modernist. Together the alliance has formed the first and only unified street proofing curriculum provider in the world.

Construction of the Alliance is in its infancy, but is predicted by many industry leaders to grow into the hundreds in a very short period of time. Three key questions at this stage are;

1. Who will be a part of this new group?

2. Who will take advantage of the exclusive rights to this opportunity in their community?

3. And what does the future hold for the Alliance participants?

Michael E. Hirchberg, Safe Day Education's founder and current President-CEO, still retains the exclusive rights to the company's curriculum in the entire Toronto, Canada area, a Metropolis of about 2.5 million people. He expects his net profit for the calendar year of 1997 to be in excess of $50,000.00 from the Safe Day Education portion his Martial Arts Business. A figure he has easily maintained for the last four years, since starting the new Safe Day Education division of his Business.

Safe Day Education's Alliance allows the Martial Arts Business Professional access to a very well assembled street proofing program and business implementation system of knowledge. Miles ahead of any thing even remotely like it, according to everyone who has seen it or purchased the package. The system has something in it that everyone can learn from. If it is followed, it helps children and adults be safer while making more money for the Martial Arts Business Owner.

Master Steve LaVallee, EFC Board Member and Bill Clark of the ATA, have the system. The Kovar Brothers of Kovar's Karate Centers are beginning its implementation right now. It has been endorsed by many organizations including the Educational Funding Company's Chairman, Mr. Nicholas Cokinos. Dr. Terrance Webster Doyle said he likes the system because "it is very well organized. " Grand Master Frank Sanchez of World Hall of Fame Sokeship Council of Grand Master's called it "Genius".

The Safe Day System is a turn key package. Complete with everything a provider needs to run the program and the business. It has a franchise look and feel without the franchise fee. Safe Day Education CEO, Mr. Michael Hirchberg, when interviewed said, "There are many good business people in our industry who are doing very well and have benefited their communities greatly. These people are the greatest candidates to do even better with our system. That doesn't mean this project is effort less to implement. Although it is a no brainier if you follow it correctly. "

Just one of the very professional ingredients included in the package is a curriculum script, not just a curriculum outline. Safe Day Education has tried to make the program fool proof so that alliance members can easily get started. In the script, each lesson is carefully detailed to maintain consistency and quality from location to location, from city to city or from staff person to staff person. Much like the french fry of a major food retailer, the quality controls are in place. The questions are answered before they are asked as found in the section on Most Common Questions.

Mr. Hirchberg comments, "As independent small business owners, if we are providing a good service in our community, we will do well. When it comes to big business, we fall short. For example, when I tried to sell my Safe Day Education Program to the third largest bank in Canada, which had the potential to bring in $300,000.00 worth of gross revenue. One of the first questions that come up in the meeting was, how large of a company are we? Could we service the entire nation? The answer, four years ago, was no. Today the answer is yes, thanks to the alliance being built by the Martial Arts Professional Community."

Now a Martial Arts small business owner can effectively market a curriculum to the largest organizations in the World. We are talking about orders in the 10's of thousands of dollars and much more. Some large companies have more than 100,000 female staff on the payroll. At suggested retail prices in the Safe Day Education System, we are talking about a $35.00 curriculum fee multiplied by 100,000 people. You add it up. It will not surprise me to see a large bank spending a $1,000,000.00 on a program for their female staff. I wonder which school owner will land the deal.

Schools, camps, community centers, associations, religious organizations, condominiums, hospitals, office buildings, government offices, conferences, fund raisers, special events, neighborhoods, families and the list goes on, have been very receptive to the program. Mr. Hirchberg mentioned in our meeting, "An employee from Sprint Canada after participating in a company provided program told a friend about the course. The referral turned into a Mother and Daughter course for 10 people at a participant's house. One of the participants of the home program later enrolled in my Martial Arts School. That student brought me a referral. Total income was a little under $4,000.00 with out spending a penny on advertising."

An incredible marketing feature of running this program is repeat business. In October Mr. Hirchberg says he taught about 200 people the course without doing any sales related activity. Mr. Hirchberg has more than 100 organizations who are on his client list. He told us he could have 200 if he wanted. Now all he does is service these accounts. No more telemarketing and asking for orders. His business runs itself.

Safe Day Education offers an exclusive right where the territorial provider has the right to teach and retain the income generated from the sales process and instruction of the program. When a sale goes, City Wide, State Wide, National or International they retain the commissions for the selling process. Sell a Nation Wide company, let other alliance members deliver the curriculum and make their money while retaining a 10 - 20 % commission for the sale.

To help with the marketing program or process, Safe Day Education has brochures, news letters, direct mail packages, posters and stationary included. Everything needed is in the package. These tools normally cost a lot of money and time to develop. Everything is glossy, in color, professional and available at very reasonable prices.

When we asked Mr. Hirchberg to tell us something unique about his system he stated, "It's very professionally done. We started out by saying if we are going to commit to the project then we are going to do it right. It has made us money from Corporations like IBM, Sprint, and North American Life Insurance. It has been accepted by 100's of PTA Presidents and endorsed by major charitable organizations. It is very widely accepted by the masses. We have never gotten this kind of response from our Karate Outreach Program. Our largest registration so far was 132 kids from one school educated in 10 hours, netting our business $4,000.00 for the small amount of effort."

The participants of the Safe Day Education course receive live interactive education, certificates of participation, free congratulations posters to color on if they are kids and work books called a "Challenge Book". The Challenge Book is fully illustrated, detailing every technique taught. It serves as a review text and evaluator of the participants comprehension. Participants must fill in the blanks to test their knowledge. The Challenge Book is then added to the participant's personal home library for future reference.

The program's content is very basic as far as the self-defense is concerned. Participants who show an eagerness to learn more are urged to continue their education at a local Martial Arts School. Yours if you have one. Discussion topics and mini lectures are integrated into the curriculum that are thought provoking and response stimulating. The participants are urged to try to answer questions concerning how they would handle a variety of situations.

Safe Day Education is essentially is teaching the participants how to become aware of danger, how to avoid danger and how to implement a course of action in the event of a physical assault.

Mr. Hirchberg teaches the Safe Day Education curriculum to more than 1,000 people annually, impacting more lives than most single school owners. He and his organization, Safe Day Education are building self esteem and confidence back into our society. Now that the alliance is forming, tens and hundreds of thousands of people will be impacted by this curriculum.

It is hard to tell exactly when the Safe Day Education Alliance will bear its fruit. If their long term goals are met by the year 2000, Safe Day Education will become a house hold name synonyms with Street Proofing Education much like Kleenex is to Tissue. Right now, Martial Arts Business Owners have an opportunity play an important role in the plan. By joining the Alliance we believe that the Martial Arts Industry will be held responsible for the Nations strongest educational effort to truly create a safer and more secure society.

Mr. Hirchberg guarantee it's professionalism to be second to non and leaves us with this comment, "It's our duty as Martial Arts Professionals to take the responsibility, to help people, to be safer in all aspects of their lives.. Isn't it our Industry who teaches people how to protect themselves and be safe or have we completely lost touch. Please get involved."
